7 Benefits of Kinesio Tape that Enhance Physical Fitness and Well being.

As an occupational therapy practicioner, I use a collection of tools and resources to overcome obstacles like pain, soft tissue laxity and more during client care.


One of the tools I use is called Kinesio tape, and it rarely fails to provide quick and effective results.

I spent several years working in skilled nursing facilities and saw my fair share of clients with debilitating knee pain due to arthritis. One of them -Joan* - was a lovely 73-year-old lady with chronic osteoarthritis. She could barely walk 10 feet before her knees would hurt so bad she would have to sit down. The pain was starting to get in the way of her hygiene. Instead of getting up and walking into the bathroom(or transferring onto a bedside commode), she was beginning to opt to urinate in a brief.


I applied Kinesio tape in addition to exercise to stabilize her knee, and she eventually could tolerate spontaneous transfers onto her bedside commode for toileting.


It's well known that taking painkillers frequently can cause damage to your liver in the long run. However, there is a non-pharmacological approach that can help alleviate both acute and chronic pain: Kinesio tape.

However, she was often not as compliant - she loved to lounge in her lazy boy chair. She would not tolerate elevating her feet above heart level. I applied Kinesio tape to both feet in a fan-shaped pattern, and by the following day, her swelling and pain had reduced considerably. She was able to tolerate more weightbearing and walking.

One of my clients -Joe had had a stroke and was starting to get some decent motor return in his right dominant paretic arm. He was starting to be able to form a weak grasp but was still struggling to extend his wrist and release objects. Applying Kinesio tape to his wrist extensors with strips over each of the fingers provided more sensory input and neuro re-education during his daily practice of grasp-release as he went about his day.

I also applied Kinesiotape to his affected shoulder to support soft tissues and prevent subluxation and pain, especially during periods(such as showering) when his arm was not supported in a shoulder brace or sling.
